I always think the Italian system of dealing with redundant football managers is best. There they are kept on the books until the end of their contract even if relieved of their position. And, usually, they are brought back into an active role as soon as the next manager is sacked. Thus they have a panel of managers they can keep sacking and re-appointing. A bit like politics really.
I wonder if that would work for BBC Directors General?
